How Bed Bugs Invaded The U.S.

April 20th, 2016

Everyone remembers the time when bed bugs were found throughout movie theaters, large companies (like Google), and department stores in New York City, but bed bugs don’t happen just in big cities with large apartment populations. Most often, bed bug infestations were found in the homes of the rich and wealthy–posh apartments, large homes and more. And simply, bed bugs made their way into homes and apartments from less bed-bug free countries–through suitcases and luggage. But how do these bed bugs affect their victims?

Any bed bug victim knows the horror of finding a bug in their bed or home and smacking them, only to find a smattering of your blood. According to an article by the Guardian, many New Yorkers found this downright terrifying—a takeover of the one place you feel most comfortable. In St. Augustine, Florida, similar things have happened, especially with the number of tourists you come in contact with on a daily basis. If you suspect bedbugs, here are just a few things that you should watch for in your home before calling for bedbug treatment.

Bed Bug

One of the first things you’ll want to check for is the box spring and the mattress. Bed bugs will typically hang out near there because they like being close to their food source: you. Using a flashlight, look at the edges of the mattress and box spring to see whether or not there are any brown stains, left over from the bed bugs themselves. Look in the seams to make sure they aren’t hiding there. Also, look to see if you can find any of the bugs themselves, even though you probably won’t see them because they are so tiny. Also, be sure to look behind the headboard because bugs can hide behind there as well. After you sleep, be sure to look through your sheets the next morning to make sure there aren’t any blood stains or rust spots, as this is a definite indication of bed bugs. Also, don’t use any of the typical places people store their luggage. Avoid luggage racks and unloading clothes on the bed.

If you think you may have bed bugs in St. Augustine, FL, especially if you’ve just been back from a trip, be sure to call a bed bug exterminator to see if they can help with your problem. Though bed bug treatment can be extremely inconvenient, it’s worth it to remove the pests from your home.
