They leave angry, red, itchy welts on the skin. They multiply into ridiculous amounts—ruining outdoor events and laying hundreds of tiny eggs. In some cases, they can even spread deadly diseases.

Every week, remove, cover, or empty out buckets, birdbaths, flower pots, and toys that may contain standing water. This removal of water sources serves to halt the mosquito reproduction cycle. Adult mosquitoes will find their way into buckets, rain barrels, and vases and lay eggs in the water. Even a tiny amount of water is enough for mosquito larvae to develop. Additionally, it only takes four days for mosquito eggs to hatch and mature into nymphs, so it is imperative that you remove any open sources of water as soon as possible.
As an extra precaution, it is recommended to clear out your gutters and drain lines of organic debris. Leaves, twigs, and grasses left in your gutters can create clogs where water will begin to pool.
Fine mesh screens can be installed on your home’s windows, doors, and porch to prevent mosquitoes from entering. When applying these barriers, ensure that the edges are fully sealed and that there are no tears or openings.
An oscillating fan can be surprisingly effective at deterring mosquitoes. A simple porch fan can make it difficult for mosquitoes to fly and land on people sitting outdoors.
Fans can also disperse carbon dioxide. As humans breathe in oxygen, they exhale carbon dioxide. Unfortunately, mosquitoes are attracted to this. The more carbon dioxide emitted in an area, the more likely mosquitoes will appear in search of people to feed on. An oscillating fan will circulate this carbon dioxide so that it is no longer concentrated in one large area—reducing a mosquitoes chance of landing by your side.
Regular lawn maintenance practices can significantly reduce mosquito populations. Mosquitoes prefer to rest in humid and dense vegetation, where they can remain safely protected from the sun and wind. Trim back hedges, bushes, and overgrown garden plants to prevent mosquitoes from using your backyard as an impromptu rest stop!
